Melbourne University Greek Association (MUnGA)
ABOUT
MUnGA has traditionally been a very active club and has always boasted a good working relationship with UMSU - the Student Union on campus - to provide large scale, diverse and great quality events to members. It celebrates a rich history as the first Greek University Association formed in Australia (est. 1955) and is one of the founders of the National Union of Greek Australian Students (est. 1969). The club has undergone a few reincarnations and rebirths since its inception and has existed as ‘MUnGA’ since 2009.
CLUB AIMS
To foster pride in Hellenic Heritage amongst the students of Hellenic descent.
To further Greek culture and tradition at the University of Melbourne.
To educate interested students by promoting and teaching the Greek Language.
To bring together people of Hellenic descent.
To bring closer the Hellenes and the philhellenes of the University of Melbourne.
To support the promotion of ancient and modern Greek history.
Aside from the awesome social events bringing upwards of 250+ people to BBQs, souvlaki days and tavern nights and building a great social environment for Hellenic students, another defining feature is the community outreach through pro-Hellenic causes. The continuity of Hellenism in Australia is achieved through language based, historical and cultural initiatives and this is something MUnGA has greatly contributed to.
MUnGA has therefore added substantial value to the meaning and purpose of university Greek clubs as not solely social platforms, but as vehicles for community causes and viral sensations every now and again.
